Mindshift: A Preview of TEDx Sonoma County 2026 with Marilyn Nagel

Marilyn Nagel

Executive Producer TEDx Sonoma County

Are you ready to challenge the way you see the world?

In our latest episode, we sit down with Marilyn Nagel, the visionary executive producer of TEDxSonomaCounty, to preview the upcoming 14th annual event. On March 7, 2026, the Jackson Theater in Santa Rosa will transform into a hub of "Ideas Worth Spreading" under the powerful theme: "Mindshift: Power of Perspective."

From the psychology of perception to the invisible hand of algorithms, this year’s event is designed to help us navigate an increasingly complex world.

What is TEDxSonomaCounty?

While the global TED stage features international icons, TEDx is a community-driven program that adheres to all the editorial, curatorial, and format rigors of the technology, entertainment, and design-themed global event. Marilyn explains that TEDxSonomaCounty is "locally grown," focusing on elevating regional voices while maintaining the high-caliber storytelling TED is known for. It’s an immersive, think-tank-style experience where the audience is just as much a part of the energy as the speakers.

The 2026 Theme: Mindshift

Why "Mindshift" and why now? In an era dominated by AI, social media bubbles, and rapid cultural shifts, our perspective is our most valuable tool.

The theme was inspired by attendee feedback, Marilyn shares. People are looking for ways to distinguish between reality and perceived reality, fact from fiction. The curation team wanted to create a space for bold ideas that help audience members develop discernment rather than just reacting to the noise.

A Star-Studded, Diverse Lineup

The 2026 speaker slate brings together an incredible range of "humor, heart, and head." Featured speakers include:

  • Festus Ezeli: NBA Champion

  • Mauricio Umansky: CEO and real estate mogul

  • Nichole Warwick: Executive Director of Blue Zones Project in Petaluma

  • Experts in Internet Culture: Unpacking how algorithms shape our worldview.

The Secret Sauce of Speaker Curation

Marilyn reveals that the curation team reviews over 200 applications annually. What’s the "X-factor" they look for?

The curation team searches for speakers who can connect deeply with the audience. It’s not just about having a great resume; it’s about having a singular, transformative idea that can spark a conversation in the lobby and carry on into the community long after the lights go down.

Join the Conversation on March 7th

TEDxSonomaCounty is more than a series of talks; it’s a community-building event. This year features a Blue Zone reception, musical performances, and a post-event gathering designed to foster the connections that lead to real-world change.

🍺 Crack One Open: Death & Taxes

The Craft Beer Concierge revisits a Santa Rosa classic: Moonlight Brewing Company’s Death & Taxes.

Brewed since the early ’90s and dubbed a “San Francisco Black Lager,” this cult favorite pours dark as night while staying remarkably drinkable. At 5.3% ABV, it carries a slightly fuller body than expected for the style, with a bold roasted aroma that leans coffee-adjacent. The flavor balances that roast with a clean lager finish and a subtle creaminess that adds depth without heaviness.

Originally crafted to offer something dark yet approachable, Death & Taxes has earned its staying power — proof that a beer can be both niche and timeless.

Curious to revisit it? The Craft Beer Concierge hosts a beer & cheese pairing event at Moonlight Brewing on Tuesday February 24th. Tickets are available here.
