Artistry in Wood 2026: A Deep Dive into Master Craftsmanship at the Museum of Sonoma County
John Cobb
Professional Woodturner
What happens when raw, reclaimed timber meets decades of refined skill? You get Artistry in Wood, one of North America’s most prestigious woodworking exhibitions.
Don Jereb
Fine Woodworker
In our latest podcast episode, we sat down with two titans of the craft: John Cobb, a professional woodturner celebrated for his hollow forms, and Don Jereb, a master woodworker famous for his gravity-defying steam-bent "Möbius Mobiles."
As the 36th Annual Artistry in Wood exhibition opens its doors at the Museum of Sonoma County, we explore the evolution of this craft, the fine line between utility and art, and the thriving woodworking community in Northern California.
From Hobbyist Roots to Global Recognition
The exhibition is hosted by the Sonoma County Woodworkers Association (SCWA), an organization founded in the late 1970s by graduates of the legendary College of the Redwoods. What began as a small local gathering has blossomed into a premier showcase of 170+ members.
This year’s show features 67 pieces by 44 makers, pushing the boundaries of what wood can do. Keep an eye out for these standout artists:
Bennett Ewing: Known for hauntingly beautiful wood sculptures.
Thomas Stockton: Showcasing a master-class cabinet featuring local walnut and intricate inlays.
David Marks: Winner of "Best Turning," Marks’ wall-mounted piece utilizes advanced inlay techniques that challenge the viewer's perception of the medium.
Is it Craft or is it Fine Art?
One of the most compelling parts of our conversation focused on the "continuum" of woodworking. Does a chair lose its artistic value because you can sit in it?
Don and John explain that the judging process—while rigorous—doesn't see a conflict between functionality and aesthetics. Whether it is a functional heirloom table or a purely sculptural hollow vessel, the criteria remain the same: sound construction, creativity, and artistic merit.
Special Event: The Wood-Made Concert (Feb 1st, 2026)
Mark your calendars for February 1, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. The museum will host a unique concert featuring instruments crafted entirely of wood by Santa Rosa-based luthier Andrew Carruthers. Carruthers, who crafts instruments for world-class musicians, provides a sonic testament to the versatility of the material.
